Building Powerful Digital Citizens, Together

11/7/18

For the past decade, No Bully has been in the anti-bullying space, serving more than 150,000 students and 300 schools nationwide. Our work has clearly demonstrated the necessity for training at earlier ages.  We understand the basic character traits of empathy and compassion need to be bolstered and magnified in order for the next generation to eliminate the isolation and bullying behaviors that have been growing in recent years. This realization, in conjunction with the expanded role of technology in our lives, even for our youngest children, was the spark that ignited our work on Power of Zero.

It is undeniable that children are immersed in the digital landscape from nearly the beginning of their lives, and are considered “digital natives.” Together with our major corporate sponsors — Hasbro, Microsoft, Facebook and AT&T — we are actively campaigning to nurture the next generation of digital natives into positive global digital citizens. This work is based on the concept that each young child can be taught about their own positive character and influence. To this end, the concept of character is broken down into “12 Powers for Good,”  defining a quality digital citizen. We then created guidelines so these powers can be taught and nurtured at a very early age.

While we can never predict what children will be exposed to while online, we can equip them with skills and tools to handle whatever they may encounter. It is that premise which drove us to create our 12 Powers for Good. The Powers were developed to be instilled and reinforced from a child’s earliest age so that he/she has those foundational beliefs as part of their habits before engaging more widely in the digital world.

No Bully and the Power of Zero feels the following 12 Powers for Good are helpful in raising children that are ready to operate in the real world, as well as the digital one.

They include:

  1. Creative Thinking
  2. Digital Knowledge
  3. Respect
  4. Connection
  5. Critical Understanding
  6. Digital Devices
  7. Compassion
  8. Emotional Regulation
  9. Defender
  10. Inclusivity
  11. Voice
  12. Resilience

As an organization, No Bully is very proud to lead the discussion about helping children attain the critical skills necessary to safely navigate the digital landscape.  More importantly, we are honored to be a part of this global collaborative with the goal of making the world a better place for children. With the advent of the internet and smart devices, children have more opportunities to learn and thrive than ever before, but with that opportunity comes the necessity for training and prudence while online.

It’s time for something innovative and historic. It’s time to take a new approach to the bullying epidemic that will have a positive impact on future generations. It’s time for the Power of Zero.

Zero Bullying.  Zero Hate. Zero Violence.
